Each month at Mitchell Chiropractic, we highlight a common condition we see in our Peoria office and explain what may be causing it. This month we’re focusing on frozen shoulder, a condition that can make even simple movements like reaching overhead or putting on a jacket feel painful and restricted.
Frozen shoulder often develops gradually. Many patients first notice mild stiffness or discomfort in the shoulder that slowly worsens over time. Eventually, the shoulder may lose a significant amount of mobility, making daily activities more difficult.
What Causes Frozen Shoulder?
Frozen shoulder, also known as adhesive capsulitis, typically occurs when the connective tissues around the shoulder joint become inflamed and tight. This leads to pain and reduced movement in the joint.
Some common contributing factors include:
- Long periods of shoulder immobilization after injury or surgery
- Joint dysfunction in the neck or upper back that affects shoulder mechanics
- Repetitive shoulder stress from work or physical activity
- Underlying health conditions such as diabetes or cardiovascular disease
Because the shoulder relies on proper movement from the neck, ribs, and upper spine, problems in these areas can sometimes contribute to shoulder stiffness and restricted motion.
A Structural Approach to Shoulder Mobility
At Mitchell Chiropractic, we look at how the entire shoulder complex is functioning. This may include evaluating the neck, shoulder joint, ribs, and rotator cuff to determine if restricted movement or joint misalignment is contributing to the problem.
Improving motion in these areas can often help restore more natural shoulder movement and reduce irritation within the joint.
When Shoulder Stiffness Should Be Evaluated
If you notice any of the following symptoms, it may be time to have your shoulder examined:
- Difficulty lifting your arm overhead
- Stiffness that gradually gets worse
- Pain reaching behind your back
- Shoulder pain interfering with sleep
